THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY NEEDS YOUR HELP!

The Earth is changing and we need explorers to help research how the animals are adapting to these changes.

Click on the Introduction link found on the Beluga Whale to see how you help Earth's Animals.

Introduction

Your Mission

Explorer,

This is the director of the Environmental Protection Agency. You can call me Captain Adapt. We need your help! We are concerned that the planet Earth is beginning to undergo many changes. We are concerned that our animals have not adapted to meet these changes. Our goal is make sure that all of the Earth's animals will be able to survive the changes. To do this we need you to research the adaptations of several animals on this planet. You will be working with many other explorers to complete this project and traveling all across the world.

The future of our planet and these animals depends on you!

If you are willing to accept this mission, click on the Task link, found on the polar bear.

Task

The Environmental Proction Agency needs you to follow these steps during your exploration:

The future of our planet and these animals depends on you!

Process

1. Research Materials

Explorer, you will need the following resources on your trip. Please make sure that you have a copy of each document.

2. Animal Selection

Look through the animals listed below. Select 3 animals that you will research throughout your exploration. Record these animals onto your Exploration Data Sheet. After you have selected all of your animals. Click on the picture to follow the animal to its home. Research the website to find where on Earth this animal can be found, then record this information onto the Exploration Data Sheet.

3. Animal Research

Click on your animal to begin your exploration. Be sure to record all discovered information about the animals adaptations on you Exploration Data Sheet.

Write a report of the animals you have research using the Adaptation Report. Use the following guidelines to begin your writing.

  • Remember your audience is the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Use as much of your researched information as possible.
  • Begin with a topic sentence. For example, "During my explorations I have discovered many animal adaptations."
  • Complete your report by stating whether or not you think the animals are adapting to their environment.

4. Creating an Adapted Animal

Now that you have finished researching your adaptable animals. The Environmental Protection Agency would like you to create your own adaptable animal.

Think about one of the animals that your researched or look at a different animal. Change something about that animal to help them adapt into a different environment. For example, change something about the giraffe to allow it to live in the arctic or something about the praying mantis that would help it to protect itself better.

After you have finished drawing your picture, write a description of your adaptable animal, its new environment, and how it has adapted.

Be creative! The more creative you are, the more your work will help the agency.

Evaluation

Explorer,

Your work during the exploration will be graded using the following rubrics.

Report Rubric: Animal Adaptations

Needs Improvement 1 Satisfactory 2 Good 3 Exemplary 4 Score
Animals and Environments 1 Animal and Environment 2-3 Animals and Environment 4 Animals and Environment 5 Animals and Environment
Adaptations 0 adaptaions for each animal 1 adaptaions for each animal 2 adaptaions for each animal At least 3 adaptations for each animal
Completion of Report Report did not fully described the adaptations of any animals Report fully described the adaptations of the 1-2 animals Report fully described the adaptations of the 3-4 animals Report fully described the adaptations of the animals
Spelling and Grammar 5 or more spelling and/or grammar errors 3-4 spelling and/or grammar errors 1-2 spelling and/or grammar errors 0 spelling and/or grammar errors

Animal Rubric: Adaptable Animal

Needs Improvement 1 Satisfactory 2 Good 3 Exemplary 4 Score
Animal Creation The animal has no adaptations. The animal's adaptations do not meet the needs of the environment. The animal has 1 adaptation for the environment. The animal and has several realistic adaptations for the choosen environment.
Illustration of the Environment. It is not clear what environment has been selected. The illustration does not resemble the environment fully. The illustration identifies the environment, but does not show the need for adaptation. The illustration clearly shows the reasons an animal would need to adapt.
Explaination of Adaptations and Environment There is no mention of the adaptations. The description lists the adaptations, but does not describe their purpose. The description defines some of the adaptations. The description clearly identifies the purpose of the adaptations in the environment.
Spelling and Grammar The final version had 5 or more spelling and/or grammar errors. The final version had 3-4 grammar and/or spelling errors. The final version had no more than 2 grammar and/or spelling errors. The final version was free of grammar and spelling errors.
