International Quiz Bowl Competition Rules

Description
High school students (ages 14 -19 in grades 9-12) from around the world with an interest in an academic competition (in English) will compete with other schools over compressed video in bi-monthly matches. Each participating school will form a team. The number of schools that can actually compete is limited so register early. You may sign up to observe as part of the global audience. Coordinator: Ellen Rubin-Wallkill Senior High School, NY.

COMPETITORS
A team shall consist of 5 students per round, grades 9-12 or equivalent. The same students do not have to compete in each round. Schools may form alternate teams-rotating them from round to round.

CONTEST
Each contest will consist of one 10 minute round per team competing. Each team will choose a captain/spokesperson and he/she will be asked to choose a category and point value. There will be three 10 minute rounds depending upon the number of participating schools.

CATEGORIES
Art Math
Entertainment Misc.
Geography Music
History Science
Literature Sports

Teams MAY NOT choose same category twice in a row.

POINT VALUE
5, 10, 20 point questions. Higher point value, the more difficult the question.

PROCEDURE FOR EACH CONTEST

  • The contest will start with the designated home team (1st team on schedule) choosing the first category and point value.
  • Questions will be read by the moderator and the home team will be given 10 seconds for team discussion and captain's answer.
  • If a correct answer is given, points will be awarded.
  • If incorrect, the same question will be asked to the opposing team and 5 seconds will be given for team discussion and captain's response.
  • If correct, points will be awarded.
  • If incorrect, that question is answered by the moderator and we proceed to the next question.
  • Whether or not the previous question was answered correctly, the choice of question and point value passes to the visiting team.
  • Choice of question, category and point value will continue on this rotating basis.

TIE BREAKER

  • If there is a tie score at the end of the 10 minute round a question will be asked of both teams.
  • Each team captain will write the answer within 15 seconds.
  • The written answer will be given to the team advisor.
  • The moderator will then ask the advisor to read the answer. If there is only one correct answer that team is declared the winner and receives the 20 point bonus as winners.
  • If there is still a tie the same tie breaker procedure will continue until a winner is decided.

END OF ROUND
At the end of the round the team with the higher score is declared the winner of the match and an addition 20 point bonus is awarded. Each team's total score is added to their previous scores.

DETERMINATION OF Quiz Bowl Champion
The team with the highest accumulated point total at the end of the school year is the Quiz Bowl champion. Participation Certificates will be sent to all schools.
