Judy's Journal
Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year. It is a time of new beginnings and a fresh start. As I write this, my first article for the Florida School Choice e-newsletter of the Florida School Choice Resource Center (FSCRC) for the 2007-08, we are pleased to continue our work for school choice in Florida. This Center was developed under the Voluntary Public School Choice grant (VPSC) from the United States Department of Education which was provided to the State of Florida in the 2002-2003 school year to expand, reinstate or improve school choice in Florida. This grant provided five-year sub-grant to Nova Southeastern University, Fischler School of Education and Human Services (FGSEHS) which provides for the increase of initiatives of the National Institute of Educational Options (NIEO) which has been part of the FGSEHS since 1998. VPSC FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Rose Raynak, I hope everyone is having a fun and safe summer. It is dry and hot up in Tallahassee with no ocean breezes to cool us down like some of you folks have. Many new things are happening around the Department. We are excited about the Department receiving a renewal of the Voluntary Public School Choice grant for another 5-year period. The management of the new grant will be housed in the Office of Independent Education and Parental Options. That office has many innovative plans to build on the first 5-year VPSC grant so that all parents in Florida are aware of the school choice options available for their children and are able to take advantage of them. Stay tuned for lots of good things happening in school choice for our children. Read On…

The center offers the member districts and schools no cost networking activities as a venue for critical conversations among high school practitioners. As a partner, The National Innovations in Educational Options (NIEO) at NSU offers technical assistance and consulting in concert with SCESC. Read On…

Coalition of Essential Schools Summer Small Schools Summer Institute 2007
Dr. Patricia Grimsley, The Coalition of Essential Schools Small Schools Summer Institute was held on Miami Beach, Florida from July 9-13, 2007 at the Miami Beach Resort and Spa. The institute provided a great opportunity to network with other participants and to learn about the work of the small schools that are members of the coalition. Many of the participants were from conversion schools. This means that the schools were a part of a larger comprehensive school and was divided into smaller schools that share the same campus, but operate as autonomous schools or traditional public schools that had become charter schools. The other group of schools represented was charter schools that were not conversions.Read On…
